GENERAL QUESTIONS

What's the concept ?

The most unlikely Spn crossover ever : Spn meets Ghibli.

Sam and Dean are tough guys but even tough guys who hunt monsters 24/7 can have a heart and doubts about their mission. I can understand : If you were a hunter, would you kill Totoro ? I mean come on : TOTORO!!!! Ok, he's strange, he has a giant leaf on his head and he looks like he's high on drugs but still...he remains absolutely adorable.

The inspiration ?

I think a lot of you recognized the now cult "bus stop scene" from the anime Tonari no Totoro (My Neighbour Totoro). For the Japanese, it's definitely one of the most famous and greatest moments ever in the history of animation. For those who don't know anything about Totoro just watch the scene below. It's a good introduction to the world of Ghibli Studio, Miyazaki Hayao's works in general, and Totoro in particular.

Where did you get the idea from ?

I bought recently a GREAT book about Oga Kazuo, the gentleman who was in charge of most the backgrounds of Ghibli animes in the 1980's-1990's. For Oga, his paintings had nothing special, they were just anime backgrounds painted with poster paints. He even threw some of them in the trash...(Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy ?!!! ) Fortunately some people knew that Oga was a pure genius and had the great idea to organize an exhibition in Tokyo. It was a tremendous success and now, Oga's paintings are not considered anymore just as anime backgrounds but as real paintings that cost thousands of yens. I can't afford  Oga's original works but thanks god, a book gathering the majority of his masterpieces was published a couple of years ago, book that includes the backgrounds of Totoro.

Don't ask me why, I immediately pictured Chibies versions of Sam and Dean next to Totoro (I know : I am nuts  ). I mean, why not ? They hunt "things" and Totoro is...a thing, after all (I guess). Well, I don't have a clue about what Totoro actually is but I am sure about one thing : Oga is definitely an amazing artist!!!

Oga Kazuo at work. Dear Sir, I want your collection of poster paints...

FOR THE PHOTOSHOP GEEKS

Tools of the trade ?

Softwares : Photoshop CS - Painter Essential 3
Graphic Tablet : Wacom Graphire 4
OS : Windows XP

How long did it take ?

About 7-8 hours I think. It's Chibies, it requires less time and work than my usual fan arts.

Did you start directly with Photoshop ?

I drew Totoro, the forest and the bus stop directly on a blue canvas in Photoshop but Sam and Dean where drawn on a sheet  first and added later. It's one of the first times I draw that kind of Chibies (with a nose, real eyes and not just two little black dots, etc) so I wanted to be sure about the result. Starting with paper and a pencil allowed me to visualize the final illustration better.

What brushes did you use ?

I practically used only custom brushes for this one. I found most of them on DA (if I remember correctly). They were very convenient, for instance, for Totoro's fur or for the bushes.

Voilà! That's it for today!!

Next : The art claim for the [livejournal.com profile] spn_reversebang  is coming soon!! I still have a lot of work to do, some arts to finish. To be honest even what I sent to the mods have nothing to do with the final result. It was reworked since. I erased a whole part of one illustration because I wasn't satisfied with one of the characters' face. Now I am late on my schedule . Silly me !

Thanks a lot for the great comment about my work ^^
You enjoyed the tutorial ? I am ALWAYS happy when people enjoyed the tutorials. I am always afraid to bore my readers with all these technical explanations and details but I think it's important to explain how and why I reached this result.
I hope I will have the time to prepare BIG technical post for the reverse BB ^^;;;
Thx again ^^
onthehill: yuri plisetsky gives a thumbs down (Duo excited)

OMG please layer and clipping-path me to death! \o/ I ADORE your technical details ♥

[identity profile] petite-madame.livejournal.com 2010-10-01 11:23 am (UTC)(link)
I hope I will have the time to finish what I want to do because I want to do a WIP for the "Take on Me" prompt and explain a bit how I colored my sketches. You will be "layered" and "clipping-pathed" to death, as you asked me to, then :D

Ah Thx about my icon! I drew it especially for the RBB but I really look pretentious on it HA HA HA :D

Oh god, talking about the RBB, shame on me! I thought I had recognized your work and I was completely wrong -_____- I think I have mistaken your work with the one of nightowl81... Silly me ^^;;;;

[identity profile] maichan.livejournal.com 2010-10-01 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm totally flattered as [livejournal.com profile] nightowl81's work is amazing! And I'm still adjusting to drawing again. I keep signing up for challenges/exchanges as a way to force my hand (literally) to product artwork as I'm much more comfortable vidding and doing websites. Drawing is a actually a very frustrating process for me, which is why I took a 7-year hiatus from it after college. And man, I so didn't mean to get all broody on your LJ!

Anyhoo, good luck with all your RBB stories. All of your prompts look amazing already!

LOL, I look forward to them :)

[identity profile] petite-madame.livejournal.com 2010-10-04 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
No, no problem I understand what you meant about forcing yourself to draw. There was a time where I was too much into pure CG art so I "forced my hand" too to go back to traditional art and to paint with acrylic and gouaches. Not always funny but necessary ^^

Anyway, I really didn't know that the "Sesame Street" prompt was yours. It's really a crazy concept, I hope you had the time to draw more :D

Good luck to you too ♥

I really didn't know that the "Sesame Street" prompt was yours.
LOL, that's actually the prompt below mine. However, I ended up scrapping what I turned in and am drawing something else entirely. But at least I'm much happier with what I did over the weekend than my original prompt. So YAY \o/

[identity profile] petite-madame.livejournal.com 2010-10-04 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh sorry, I must have mistaken the numbers when I looked at the big reveal!! ^^;; Ok, so I REALLY didn't recognize your prompt : Epic fail from A to Z ಠ_ಠ

Glad you found the inspiration again and that you are now satisfied with your work. I am looking forward to seeing the result ♥

Oh my god!! *squee* Totoro!! Sammy is so right!! Of course they shouldn't shoot him!! This is so adorable and cute and I want to squish Dean a bit!! This is brilliant! Not only the idea, but the execution as well! The colours and the detail are awesome!

[identity profile] petite-madame.livejournal.com 2010-12-13 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know what Totoro is either! He looks like a BIG BIG cat but I don't know what he is (if he is actually a "he" ).
Don't worry, I want one too. Everybody wants one!! That thing is just SO adorable!! ♥

Thanks a lot for the comment about my chibies ^^

*LMAO* This is brilliant! I'm a huge fan of Miyazaki Totoro has been a favourite movie of mine, and that is so typical of the guys to question whether to kill it or not XD

Ever thought of maybe doing a series based on Miyazaki's work? How would they react to Howl, his castle, or Calsifer (would they try a devil's trap on him?) What about finding themselves in the bath-house surrounded by spirits in Sprited Away?

I love your work and it's very inspiring for me :D I'm learning a lot by seeing your drawings and your explanations on how you did them. They show me that great art can be achievable :)
