GENERAL QUESTIONS

What's the concept ?

The most unlikely Spn crossover ever : Spn meets Ghibli.

Sam and Dean are tough guys but even tough guys who hunt monsters 24/7 can have a heart and doubts about their mission. I can understand : If you were a hunter, would you kill Totoro ? I mean come on : TOTORO!!!! Ok, he's strange, he has a giant leaf on his head and he looks like he's high on drugs but still...he remains absolutely adorable.

The inspiration ?

I think a lot of you recognized the now cult "bus stop scene" from the anime Tonari no Totoro (My Neighbour Totoro). For the Japanese, it's definitely one of the most famous and greatest moments ever in the history of animation. For those who don't know anything about Totoro just watch the scene below. It's a good introduction to the world of Ghibli Studio, Miyazaki Hayao's works in general, and Totoro in particular.

Where did you get the idea from ?

I bought recently a GREAT book about Oga Kazuo, the gentleman who was in charge of most the backgrounds of Ghibli animes in the 1980's-1990's. For Oga, his paintings had nothing special, they were just anime backgrounds painted with poster paints. He even threw some of them in the trash...(Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy ?!!! ) Fortunately some people knew that Oga was a pure genius and had the great idea to organize an exhibition in Tokyo. It was a tremendous success and now, Oga's paintings are not considered anymore just as anime backgrounds but as real paintings that cost thousands of yens. I can't afford  Oga's original works but thanks god, a book gathering the majority of his masterpieces was published a couple of years ago, book that includes the backgrounds of Totoro.

Don't ask me why, I immediately pictured Chibies versions of Sam and Dean next to Totoro (I know : I am nuts  ). I mean, why not ? They hunt "things" and Totoro is...a thing, after all (I guess). Well, I don't have a clue about what Totoro actually is but I am sure about one thing : Oga is definitely an amazing artist!!!

Oga Kazuo at work. Dear Sir, I want your collection of poster paints...

FOR THE PHOTOSHOP GEEKS

Tools of the trade ?

Softwares : Photoshop CS - Painter Essential 3
Graphic Tablet : Wacom Graphire 4
OS : Windows XP

How long did it take ?

About 7-8 hours I think. It's Chibies, it requires less time and work than my usual fan arts.

Did you start directly with Photoshop ?

I drew Totoro, the forest and the bus stop directly on a blue canvas in Photoshop but Sam and Dean where drawn on a sheet  first and added later. It's one of the first times I draw that kind of Chibies (with a nose, real eyes and not just two little black dots, etc) so I wanted to be sure about the result. Starting with paper and a pencil allowed me to visualize the final illustration better.

What brushes did you use ?

I practically used only custom brushes for this one. I found most of them on DA (if I remember correctly). They were very convenient, for instance, for Totoro's fur or for the bushes.

Voilà! That's it for today!!

****

Next : The art claim for the [livejournal.com profile] spn_reversebang  is coming soon!! I still have a lot of work to do, some arts to finish. To be honest even what I sent to the mods have nothing to do with the final result. It was reworked since. I erased a whole part of one illustration because I wasn't satisfied with one of the characters' face. Now I am late on my schedule . Silly me !

OH. MY. GOD. Sam and Dean and Totoro together! The mere thought fills my heart with glee and looking at it, I think I might explode from all the awesome! :D:D:D

And not only is the idea and concept amazing, you've done an absolutely fantastic job with the illustration. BEAUTIFUL! Love the texture of Totoro's fur and Dean's itty bitty stubble.

<3<3<3

Brilliant! Not just the art work, but this entire post.

I love your attention to detail and the boy faces are adorable - as is the dialogue.

*draws hearts*

First, let me tell you that your icon is absolutely and definitely AWESOME and just perfect for the occasion \o/

Love the texture of Totoro's fur and Dean's itty bitty stubble
OMG!! I can't believe you actually noticed Dean's stubble!!! I draw it just for fun and thought "Well, nobody is gonna pay attention anyway, it's just to add details that nobody will see except me". I am just SO glad you did ♥

Thanks a lot for the great comment about my art! Glad you love my crossover (I am also thing about a Dean and Damon (from the Vampire Diaries) crossover but that's another story...^^;;)

Gorgeous, and so cute! As usual, it was really interesting to read your narrative and see your inspiration. Love the rain and the furriness...

[identity profile] petite-madame.livejournal.com 2010-09-19 11:55 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you very much ^^
I just love to add details even if they are not going to be very visible, like Dean's stubble or Sam's plaid shirt.

Glad you enjoyed the entire post and not only the drawing! I always hesitate to give too many technical details, I am afraid to bore people to death if I start to talk about layers and clipping path.... :/

I see thanks to your icon that you love Pixar. If you love Pixar, you are going to love Totoro, I am sure of it! I am 99% sure that the guys from Pixar where inspired at a moment of another by the works of Studio Ghibli. Well, to cut a long story short : try to watch Totoro if you can (he's adorable, you will want one immediately. I am 33 and I have a Totoro plush at home *shame* )

Thanks a lot for the great feedback about my work ♥

This is awesome!

[identity profile] petite-madame.livejournal.com 2010-09-19 12:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks a lot ^^ I am always happy when people tell me they enjoyed the small tutorials. I am sometimes afraid to bore people with technical rambling. :/

The rain is actually very easy and quick to add : it's a brush (I should have mention it, I forgot :/) One layer, one click and you got the rain (but you have to add the rain drops by yourself ^^)

Thanks again ♥

Haha, that's so adorable. <3 Dean's expression is priceless.

[identity profile] amberdreams.livejournal.com 2010-09-19 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Brushes are so cool! And the rain drops on their faces are a lovely detail (like the stubble - on a baby face - odd but cute)

[identity profile] kerfuffling.livejournal.com 2010-09-19 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
best crossover ever! that was so adorable <3

[identity profile] petite-madame.livejournal.com 2010-09-19 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah! The trouble is that, with Chibies, all the characters look like kids so when you add a stubble or a beard, it's a little bit odd ^^;;
Thx again :D

[identity profile] dreamlittleyo.livejournal.com 2010-09-19 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
THIS!!! This is fantastic, and GORGEOUSLY done! I giggled out loud.

[identity profile] petite-madame.livejournal.com 2010-09-19 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
NO, no, no!! They are not killing Totoro. They maybe thought about doing it but the boys have a heart. Totoro will be ok, don't worry ;)
Thanks a lot for the great comment about my art ♥

[identity profile] petite-madame.livejournal.com 2010-09-19 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you know what is even more awesome ? Your icon. ^o^ It's written very small but the text is hilarious!
Thanks a lot for the lovely comment about my art ♥

[identity profile] petite-madame.livejournal.com 2010-09-19 01:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks a lot ♥
I was afraid I drew the face a little bit too plump but finally as he was cute, I didn't want to change it :D

[identity profile] petite-madame.livejournal.com 2010-09-19 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know if it's the best, but I am sure that's the most ridiculous (but adorable) XD
Thanks a lot for the lovely comment ♥

[identity profile] petite-madame.livejournal.com 2010-09-19 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Glad it made you laugh! I am not always sure this kind of silly joke actually make people laugh but you comment cheered me up ♥

woow....I love TOTORO :D

Totoro and boys collaboration is very interesting idea.

I tried not to draw them too cute but at the end, well I guess they are!
Thanks a lot for stopping by and for the lovely comment about my art ♥
