Chibies 4 - Dean, do we really have to shoot him ?

GENERAL QUESTIONS
What's the concept ?
The most unlikely Spn crossover ever : Spn meets Ghibli.
Sam and Dean are tough guys but even tough guys who hunt monsters 24/7 can have a heart and doubts about their mission. I can understand : If you were a hunter, would you kill Totoro ? I mean come on : TOTORO!!!! Ok, he's strange, he has a giant leaf on his head and he looks like he's high on drugs but still...he remains absolutely adorable.
The inspiration ?
I think a lot of you recognized the now cult "bus stop scene" from the anime Tonari no Totoro (My Neighbour Totoro). For the Japanese, it's definitely one of the most famous and greatest moments ever in the history of animation. For those who don't know anything about Totoro just watch the scene below. It's a good introduction to the world of Ghibli Studio, Miyazaki Hayao's works in general, and Totoro in particular.
Where did you get the idea from ?
I bought recently a GREAT book about Oga Kazuo, the gentleman who was in charge of most the backgrounds of Ghibli animes in the 1980's-1990's. For Oga, his paintings had nothing special, they were just anime backgrounds painted with poster paints. He even threw some of them in the trash...(Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy ?!!!
) Fortunately some people knew that Oga was a pure genius and had the great idea to organize an exhibition in Tokyo. It was a tremendous success and now, Oga's paintings are not considered anymore just as anime backgrounds but as real paintings that cost thousands of yens. I can't afford Oga's original works but thanks god, a book gathering the majority of his masterpieces was published a couple of years ago, book that includes the backgrounds of Totoro.
Don't ask me why, I immediately pictured Chibies versions of Sam and Dean next to Totoro (I know : I am nuts
). I mean, why not ? They hunt "things" and Totoro is...a thing, after all (I guess). Well, I don't have a clue about what Totoro actually is but I am sure about one thing : Oga is definitely an amazing artist!!!

Oga Kazuo at work. Dear Sir, I want your collection of poster paints...

FOR THE PHOTOSHOP GEEKS
Tools of the trade ?
Softwares : Photoshop CS - Painter Essential 3
Graphic Tablet : Wacom Graphire 4
OS : Windows XP
How long did it take ?
About 7-8 hours I think. It's Chibies, it requires less time and work than my usual fan arts.
Did you start directly with Photoshop ?
I drew Totoro, the forest and the bus stop directly on a blue canvas in Photoshop but Sam and Dean where drawn on a sheet first and added later. It's one of the first times I draw that kind of Chibies (with a nose, real eyes and not just two little black dots, etc) so I wanted to be sure about the result. Starting with paper and a pencil allowed me to visualize the final illustration better.

What brushes did you use ?
I practically used only custom brushes for this one. I found most of them on DA (if I remember correctly). They were very convenient, for instance, for Totoro's fur or for the bushes.

Voilà! That's it for today!!

Next : The art claim for the
spn_reversebang is coming soon!! I still have a lot of work to do, some arts to finish. To be honest even what I sent to the mods have nothing to do with the final result. It was reworked since. I erased a whole part of one illustration because I wasn't satisfied with one of the characters' face. Now I am late on my schedule . Silly me !

Your posts always make my day :-)

Date: 2010-09-19 05:34 pm (UTC)...that makes it sound like i have a totoro sex toy. O.O which i don't! he's just a toy for kids! he's carrying a little felt bag of rice over his shoulder! his tail's on a string, and you pull it out and as it retracts he buzzes all over the table!
anyway. this is completely, completely adorable. i love dean's o.O face. (and i didn't notice his stubble but i did notice the tiny zipper teeth on their jackets, all shiny in the rain.) i just hope the boys leave before the catbus shows up....
