The sketchbook entry: 9 double pages from my sketchbooks

After posting a couple of weeks ago an entry devoted to my sketchbook, I decided to browse a part of the sketchbooks I had at home to find my favorite double pages. Once again, I'm sorry to post photos and not scans but those sketches are a bit hard to scan because of spiral binding in the middle, particularly the A4 ones. What I don't understand however if why some pages appear to be purple-ish on the photos, particularly the one on the left. It's graphite on paper so everything should be gray.

Some images can take some time to load.

PART ONE: A4 sketchbook (21 x 29,7 cm)

The "November Rain" Page

I swear it's the only death!art of this post ^^;;

I drew this one for the latest [livejournal.com profile] spn_reversebang. This art is inspired by the Guns n' Roses' promotion video for the song November Rain: it starts by a beautiful wedding, everybody's happy...until the bride's death. The video ends by an incredible funeral scene with the lead female cast, Stephanie Seymour, in a big black coffin. I adapted the concept to an RPS with Jensen as the "dead bride".

Left: Jensen the day of his death, in a coffin with a close up on his hands.

Right: A scene of Jared and Jensen's wedding with the boys looking all happy (top) and a detail of the couple's house after Jensen's death with his wedding ring and a bunch of flowers (a direct reference to the last image of the GnR video)

I loved this prompt but I finally dropped it because I found no answer to the following question:

"Where the hell am I gonna find an author who is a fan of Guns n' Roses and who isn't allergic to death!fics?"

I mean seriously, WHO is ready to write a story that STARTS with the death of one of the main characters? There's still the solution of Jensen coming back as a ghost/zombie/living dead though...

I almost posted it, the drawing even made it to the color stage as you can see below even if it remained unfinished.

The "Small Small World" Page

At the end of 2010, I teamed up with [livejournal.com profile] dragonspell for the [livejournal.com profile] spn_reversebang for the story Small Small World, a fic where Jared is surrounded by annoying (and very green) little creatures, the Del Montes, he's the only one able to see. I started to draw several illustrations showing the everyday life of Jared and the peas at home and how they would collaborate on an everyday basis. Living with the Del Montes is like babysitting 24/7 500 kids obsessed by food, ebay and TV.

Left: Jared having a hair cut done by the Del Montes. (Translation: Jared had to face the truth: the Del Montes were a bunch of annoying little brats who would eat everything in the house but they had a certain gift for hair styling and would always cut Jared's hair beautifully)

Right: The Del Montes enjoying some cupcakes and a big ice cream and going into a food fight.

The "Pictures of You" page

In May-July 2011, I worked on a fic by [livejournal.com profile] akintay called You are the one with your finger on the gun. I drew those two illustrations as a part of the soundtrack art but I finally gave up because I didn't find them dark and angsty enough. In addition, I couldn't think of a song to go with these pictures (No, Lady Gaga's Telephone wasn't an option and I was already using The Cure's Pictures of you for another fic )

About two or three days ago however, I did a thing I don't really like to do: I detached the Sam page to scan it and to color it properly. I really, really wanted to see this sketch colored and it was the only way.

The "Shawn Barber style" page

One of my favorite contemporary artist is Shawn Barber. He's a specialist of oil painting portraits, most particularly of portraits of heavily tattooed people (Shawn..if you are looking for models, my fat ass and I are available). This page is directly inspired by his style. I draw this art as a prompt for [livejournal.com profile] spn_illuminated but finally dropped it to focus on a Carnival story instead (that still includes tattoos). I didn't see it interesting enough for a prompt.

The "What are you waiting for/Gwen in Wonderland" page

I am mad about Alice in Wonderland and if I have the occasion to draw something inspired by it, I don't hesitate. I mixed in this art two visions of Alice: the PV for What are you waiting for by Gwen Stefani and the Cheshire Cat from the Tim Burton movie. The starting point was Gwen and then it grew bigger and bigger on the left. I've always loved drawing art that starts with one tiny character and then gets completely out of control, like this drawing I drew during a lecture at the University eleven years ago.

PART TWO: 13 x 18 cm sketchbook

The "Nawak" pages

In French, the word "nawak" means, in slang, "miscellaneous" but can also mean "it doesn't make sense" (C'est 'porte nawak). This is precisely what those pages are all about: miscellaneous stuffs that don't always make sense. I'm posting the ones with some Supernatural art in them but you have to imagine that most of my nawak pages are full of silly doodles, particularly doodles of my favorite target: my Dad.

Page 1

Left: Saying that I've been obsessed by this bird since the moment I saw it on the Net is an understatement. I LOVE IT!! I knew I wanted to include it in an art someday but I didn't know how. I kept on drawing it again and again during the month of November 2011 (I think I found at least 3 sketches of that thing) until I had the idea to include it in my Christmas present for Vongue. (Translation: November 2011. A baby owl doing what baby owls do best, sleeping and being cute. In fact, this bird is ridiculous...)

Right: Portrait of Misha, a sketch for my 2011 [livejournal.com profile] spn_reversebang, Weird Science.

Page 2

Left: A portrait of Sam writing and researching because there can never be enough portraits of Sam writing and researching in this world...

Right: An horribly mean little apple trying to eat the Del Montes. This apple is inspired by a manip I found one day on the Internet.

Page 3

Left: A tooth complaining it can't eat anything else but yogurt. I drew this one not so long ago after having important teeth problems. Like the little tooth, I couldn't eat anything else but yogurt, soup and puree. (Translation: All I can eat is yogurt and I hate yogurt, it's disgusting. FML)

Right: My favorite frog and childhood idol, Kermit.

BONUS

The 100% fangirling envelope

I'm a complete fangirl (news at eleven...). However, I don't only fangirl shamelessly Supernatural and the actors, I also fangirl completely the artists of this fandom. Sometimes I redrew some drawings I liked not because I think I can do it better but much more because I love them so much that I have this irrepressible desire to draw something inspired by them. Long story short, I draw fan arts of fan arts (It's fanartception? ). An example below, a fan art of  [livejournal.com profile] artmetica 's art, drawn for the fan fiction, The Law of Conservation of Energy. (Original art HERE). I drew this one at the back of an envelope.

Tools of the trade

Here is what I use (mainly) to draw my sketches (from left to right)

1) Copic Marker T6 - Toner Grey n°6 (I rarely use it but it's very convenient when I draw a night scene or very dark shadows)
2) Copic Marker T0 Toner Grey N°0 (I use it for the skin tones and when I need a big light grey uniform surface like Jared's face in the "Small Small Word page" or Misha with glasses on his head. I also love it for the shadows under the eyes and the iris).
3) Staedtler Mars Micro 0.3 - Mechanical Pencil: for details and crosshatching.
4) Bic Matic 0,7 mm - Mechanical Pencil: for most of the art. Line art, shadows, crosshatching. You can basically draw everything with this little guy.
5) Grafwood Caran d'Ache 9B: for shadows and big black surfaces.
6) Rexel Cumberland 6B: same as above
7) Some 4B pencil bought in a 100 yens shop: for shadows and sometimes construction lines.
Below) Tria Pantone 264 - T. I use this one a lot for shadows even on B&W sketches. What I love is that the color changes according to the paper. I never know what I am going to obtain. Sometimes it's purple, sometimes it's light grey, sometimes it can even be dark grey. :)

Voilà!!
I hope you enjoyed this post!
Next: Paris at Christmas time, better late than never but I have SO MANY photos that I didn't know what to choose!
See you soon
